Washed and hung on porch no rain predicted. Dried before I went to bed. Called for hair appt. for Thursday. Washed car as it looked awful and did some baking. Also made rubarb [sic] sauce.

[In upper margin: “I weigh 140!!”] No history or philosophy. Practiced and studied. Very warm. No house meeting. Betty and I went to town in afternoon. Got ice cream. Practiced. Sort of cloudy. Piano lesson. Good dinner. Jacq, Betty and I went for a walk afterwards. Back in time for vespers. Sat in balcony - made spectacle of ourselves climbing over seats! Mr. Berry talked. Very good. Lovely night. Back to hall and talked to Mary Jo and Jane. About 8:30 they went over to the sorority sing. Betty and I stayed in their room and looked at fashion magazines. Then about 9 we settled down to studying. Wrote paper on “Eve of St. Agnes” for Eng. lit. I stayed up til 11:30 and typed mine. Was I glad to get that done! Met Mr. Carson this afternoon.

It is still cool and cloudy. It rained off and on all day. We practiced the play in the morning. Played piano in chapel. After school Helen and I played polo until it started to rain and then we went on the porch to play but it rained so hard we had to go in. There was a rainbow and it was very beautiful. When it stopped we went out again and George came over. Helen and I played polo some more and George wanted to be on my side because Helen was ahead of me. Helen wouldn’t let him and I told him not to but he did and he and Helen got in a fuss. Helen went home mad. At 6 I listened to One Man’s Family. Helen found a little stray kitten and brought it down to show me before she took it to Mrs. Turner. It was so cute. At night it rained and I read.

Pa drew off the last load of wheat this forenoon. I marked out some ground for Willie and he planted beans there. I have been doing a good deal of gardening today. Went to the swamps and put in some onion seed and a hill of mellons [sic] as an experiment. It has been showering this afternoon. I am going over to stay with Kate tonight.

Kate and I [?] all the grapevines (137) and cuttings (210) today. We worked hard. Fred Waters planted corn on our place today. His father and Willie helped him. It was misty this morning, but cleared off.

I began to crochet a pair socks for the babe today. Did but little at it. Harrie came over in the evening. He looks some better than he did when he left but I fear he will never be well again. The sun shines very warm today. Betsey weaving. Matt spinning for her some dresses. Atheline spinning for the negro’s pants. I received a letter from Mr. Henry by the mail today. He & Matt were in Greenville. Last Friday they went up on Crayershead Mountain.

My wife again up by four o’clock, to go to gather May-dew; and so back home by seven, to bed, and by and by I up and to the office, where all the morning, and dined at noon at home with my people, and so all the afternoon. In the evening my wife and I all alone, with the boy, by water, up as high as Putney almost, with the tide, and back again, neither staying going nor coming; but talking, and singing, and reading a foolish copy of verses upon my Lord Mayor’s entertaining of all the bachelors, designed in praise to my Lord Mayor, and so home and to the office a little, and then home to bed, my eyes being bad. Some trouble at Court for fear of the Queen’s miscarrying; she being, as they all conclude, far gone with child.
